Important Fall 2019 Semester Dates

Upper Albany Main Street welcomes all participating businesses and students to the fall 2019 semester.  Below is a list of upcoming dates:

  • September 4, 2019:  First day of class
  • September 9, 2019:  Business owners meet student (Hartford Police Department introduction)

The semester will end on December 9, 2019.

All students are required to participate 5 hours per week with their assigned business.

All classes are scheduled at the Handel Performing Arts Center (Community Room) for each Monday, from 10:45 am to 12:05 pm.  All business owners are welcome to attend.

Route 44 Safety Improvement Project Update

Schedule: Week of August 12, 2019*

Normal Work Hours: 7:00am – 5:00pm, Monday-Friday

  • Preparation for sidewalk demolition will occur on the south side of Albany between Garden and Bedford and also on the north side of Albany between Edgewood and Vine. Sidewalk access will be maintained. Expect partial lane closures within the area.
  • Installation of conduit and light pole foundations heads east on the south side of Albany between Magnolia and Irving.
  • The new traffic lights at the Kent and Albany intersection will become fully operational this week.
  • Concrete sidewalks and driveway aprons will be installed on the south side of Albany between Sigourney and Magnolia.
  • Concrete bus pads will be installed on Albany between Homestead and Oakland. Expect partial lane closures within the construction area.
  • Driveway paving will occur in various locations between Woodland and Burton.
  • Installation of brick pavers continues on the north side of Albany between Lenox and Edgewood.

Schedule: Week of August 19, 2019*

Normal Work Hours: 7:00am – 5:00pm, Monday-Friday

  • Sidewalk demolition will occur on the north side of Albany between Edgewood and Vine and also on the south side of Albany between Garden and Bedford. New concrete sidewalks will be installed on the south side of Albany between Irving and Garden.
  • Installation of granite curb will occur on the south side of Albany between Garden and Edgewood.
  • Installation of conduit and light pole foundations will occur on the north side of Albany between Edgewood and Sigourney, and will continue on the south side of Albany, east of Magnolia.
  • Traffic signals will be installed at the intersections of Vine/Burton and Magnolia.
  • Bus pad installation continues on Albany east of Homestead.

Business access will be maintained. All travel lanes on Albany will remain open before 9am and after 3pm; during other hours, partial lane closures may occur. Traffic will be maintained in both directions on Homestead and Westbourne. Hartford Police will assist motorists.

Art, Music, & Culture in the Capital City – Summer In Hartford

On Thursday, August 1, 2019, SummerInHartford.com’s Concert Series, along with Kali Wale & Drum Sound Language performed at Scott’s Jamaican Bakery on Albany Avenue.

Normal Work Hours: 7:00am – 5:00pm, Monday-Friday

  • Sidewalk reconstruction will begin near the Bravo Plaza Albany entrance. Pedestrian access will be maintained.
  • Installation of remaining granite curb will occur at the Bravo Plaza Albany entrance. Curb installation will also continue on the south side of Albany between Burton and Magnolia. Traffic will be maintained in both directions on Albany.
  • Light pole foundations, conduit, and temporary illumination will be installed on the south side of Albany between Burton and Magnolia.
  • Installation of new traffic lights and pedestrian signals will occur at the intersection of Oakland and Albany.
  • New concrete sidewalks will be installed on the northeast corner of Blue Hills this week.
  • Installation of brick pavers will occur on the northwest corner of Blue Hills.
  • Installation of new street signs continues.

Schedule: Week of July 22, 2019*

Normal Work Hours: 7:00am – 5:00pm, Monday-Friday

  • Sidewalk reconstruction continues near the Bravo Plaza Albany entrance. Pedestrian access will be maintained.
  • Installation of conduit, decorative lighting and other electrical work will occur on the SE corner of Blue Hills.
  • Installation of new traffic lights and pedestrian signals will occur at the intersection of Sigourney and Albany.
  • New fencing and gates will be installed on Albany between Kent and Oakland.
  • Installation of brick pavers will occur on the northeast corner of Blue Hills.
  • Street sign installation continues.

Living Word Imprints Expands To Second Location

Upper Albany Main Street merchant, Living Word Imprints, has expanded to a second location!  After securing a contract with the East Hartford School District, Herman Todd, Owner of Living Word Imprints is now one of the few exclusive school uniform providers for over nine East Hartford schools.  To include a presence within the East Hartford community, Herman has opened a school uniform retail location at 804 Silver Lane in East Hartford.  In addition to his new location, you can also visit Living Word Imprints at 450 Homestead Avenue in Hartford.

Albany Avenue / Bravo Plaza Entrance Re-Opens After Construction

The Bravo Plaza entrance from Albany Avenue is now open to public traffic.  As a reminder, you may enter Bravo Plaza from Albany Avenue (heading east) or through Woodland Street.  To exit the plaza, you may use the Woodland Street intersection or exit east onto Albany Avenue.  For additional information, please contact Kimberli Owens (Tectonic Outreach Specialist) at (860) 263-8533.

  • Installation of granite curb will occur on the NE corner of Blue Hills and Albany and also at the Bravo Plaza Albany entrance.
  • Installation of light pole foundations, conduit, and temporary illumination will occur on the NE corner of Blue Hills.
  • Conduit installation will occur across the roadway at the intersection of Edgewood and Albany. Expect partial lane closures in this area.
  • Installation of new street signs continues.

Schedule: Week of July 8, 2019*

Normal Work Hours: 7:00am – 5:00pm, Monday-Friday

  • Roadway reconstruction will occur on the NE corner of Blue Hills and Albany. Expect partial lane closure in the work zone.
  • Bravo Plaza Albany entrance reconstruction continues. All Bravo Plaza merchants remain open for business. For McDonald’s access use Albany Avenue. For access to all other Bravo Plaza merchants use Woodland.
  • Installation of granite curb will begin on the south side of Albany between Burton and Magnolia and will continue at the Bravo Plaza Albany entrance.
  • Installation of light pole foundations, conduit, and temporary illumination continues east on the south side of Albany and Burton.
  • Installation of new street signs continues.
  • Sidewalk construction continues at the NE corner of Blue Hills.
  • Sidewalk installation will occur on the SE corner of Woodland.
  • Installation of brick pavers will occur on the south side of Albany between Edgewood and Sigourney, on the NW corner of Lenox, and also on the NW corner of Blue Hills.

Bravo Plaza / Albany Avenue Entrance Reconstruction Notice

During reconstruction, the Albany Avenue entrance to Bravo Plaza will be for McDonald’s customers use only!  There will be no vehicular access to McDonald’s from the Woodland Street entrance.  The Albany Avenue entrance will be the only access to McDonald’s during this time.  Customers to other Bravo Plaza stores are directed to enter on Woodland Street.

The Albany Avenue exit will be closed during reconstruction.  All traffic is directed to exit Bravo Plaza using Woodland Street.

Week of June 17, 2019

  • New traffic signals will be activated at the intersection of Woodland and Albany.
  • Line striping will occur on Woodland from the Bravo Plaza Entrance to Albany. Two-way traffic will be maintained.
  • New concrete sidewalks will be installed on the northwest corner of Blue Hills and also on the south side of Albany between Edgewood and Sigourney.
  • Sidewalk/driveway demolition and roadside curb installation will occur on the east side of Blue Hills near the Albany Branch Library. Pedestrian detours and partial lane closures will occur all week on Blue Hills from Greenfield to Albany.
  • Installation of light pole foundations, conduit, and temporary illumination will occur at the intersection of Edgewood and Albany. Partial lane closures will occur within the area.
  • Traffic sign installation continues east of Woodland.
  • Brick paver installation continues east on the north side of Albany between Deerfield and Lenox and also on the south side of Albany between Edgewood and Sigourney.

Week of June 24, 2019

  • Installation of light pole foundations, conduit, and temporary illumination will occur on Blue Hills near the Artists Collective and continues at the intersection of Edgewood and Albany.
  • Conduit installation will occur across the roadway at the intersection of Sigourney and Albany. Expect partial lane closures in this area.

Looking Ahead… Reconstruction of the Bravo Plaza Albany entrance is scheduled to begin within the next month:

  • During reconstruction, the ALBANY ENTRANCE will be ENTER ONLY and all traffic will EXIT Bravo Plaza on WOODLAND ONLY.
  • Possible Duration: three (3) weeks.
