Clean Water Project
Upper Albany Main Street is giving back to the local community by collaborating with the Metropolitan District to aid in the transition of Albany Avenue from a 19th century sewer system to a 21st century state. UAMS has been involved as a community liaison to promote the Clean Water Project and its continuous status updates to affected businesses and residents in the Upper Albany neighborhood.
The Clean Water Project encompasses three major goals:
- Reduce the number of combined sewer overflows (CSOs) in the Hartford Central Sewer System
- Elimination of sanitary sewer overflows (SSOs) in the sanitary sewers of Wethersfield, West Hartford, Windsor, Rocky Hill and Newington.
- Reduce the levels of nitrogen that occur with these overflows
Upper Albany Main Street has been working in the service of the residents involved in the Burton Street Sewer Separation Project, encompassing Burton Street, Magnolia Street, Irving Street, and Sigourney Street. This portion of the Clean Water Project involves the separation of storm water flows from the sewers to prevent overflows. To accomplish this task requires the creation of a new sanitary sewer line coupled with new, separate laterals to the houses on all four streets.
UAMS continues to keep the residents and businesses abreast of the projects progress and, continuing with their excellence in service learning, is partnering with the University of Hartford’s College of Engineering, Technology, and Architecture to bring Engineering undergraduates into this exciting opportunity for real world experience.
